LCC to offer free online tutoring
JAN. 26, 2021
LANSING, Mich. -- All Lansing Community College students will soon have access to free online tutoring.
In an announcement issued on Monday, Jan. 25, LCC President Steve Robinson said the college plans to offer online tutoring in an effort to provide more educational resources to students amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“Lansing Community College has gone fully remote because of Covid, as have most colleges and universities across the state,” he said. “We don’t have any students on campus right now, and we certainly don’t have any face-to-face tutors available for them during this time like we normally would during the school year. What we’ve tried to do is make tutoring more accessible to all students. Being able to make sure that we have quality tutoring available, especially now, is really important.”
Cindy Storie, Director of The Learning Commons at LCC, said she understands the difficulty many students are currently facing since shifting to fully remote learning amid the pandemic, which is why LCC has tried to make accessing the new online tutoring feature as easy as possible for students.
“They will be able to access the online tutoring feature through their existing accounts in the myLCC Portal,” she said. “Upon logging into their account, students will be directed to the online tutoring page through the ‘Online Learning Commons’ tab. Once they’re on the tutoring page, there are several different study tips and tools that are available for them to use, such as a place to create their own flashcards so they can study and quiz themselves on their coursework. There are also additional prep materials for different courses that go above and beyond the resources that are available for them in their actual classes to help them with studying.”
The new online tutoring feature can assist students in more ways than just simply offering studying tips and materials, as students can also get help from live online tutors.
“They are available 24/7, and they are available for most of the courses we offer here at LCC,” Storie said. “We are looking to add live tutors soon for any courses that are not yet covered.”
When asked about the new online tutoring resource, LCC student Adam Booth said, “Honestly, I probably would have failed without it. I’m not a great student, and so it’s a big deal for me to even be going to college in the first place. If it’s not convenient for me, I’m not going to do it. That sounds bad, but whatever. I would never have walked into a meeting with a tutor before. I much prefer online.”
Emma Goodrich, another LCC student who plans to use the online tutoring option when it becomes available, echoed Booth’s sentiments. “They should have done this a long time ago,” she said. “I’m glad Covid kind of forced them to come up with this. I plan on using the online option all the time, even when the pandemic no longer requires it.”
Robinson said the college plans to roll out the online tutoring feature before the end of the semester, and all students will get a link sent to them by email prompting them to sign up.
